Seminar Reflection: The Legacy of Columbus In this seminar I participated in the seminar on the maps of different explorers. I discussed how I thought that Columbus Day shouldn’t be a holiday due to both the information given on the maps, the packet on Columbus, and my previous knowledge. The group of students who participated in the seminar with me on the maps spent a lot of time comparing the map of where Columbus traveled to other explorers. My group of students also debated whether or not Columbus was deserving of a holiday. Overall we all agreed that Columbus did not deserve a holiday due to the fact that he killed a lot of people, didn’t even discover America, and because he didn’t even know that he discovered a new piece of land.Christopher Columbus does not deserve the honor of getting a National Holiday in America. Not only did Columbus not even discover America, he also tortured and killed many people in the process of getting what he wanted. The general opinion of my classmate’s on whether Christopher Columbus deserves a holiday or not was generally that he did not deserve a holiday. My classmates believed that Christopher Columbus really didn’t even have a part in American history, and has nothing to do with America. They also thought that his actions against the Native people of South America were inexcusable. Therefore Columbus Day in the general opinion of my classmates was that Christopher Columbus does not deserve a holiday.Christopher Columbus and his men killed a lot of innocent people. For example they made a law that for every one Spaniard lost they would kill one hundred Indians. In the three to four months that Bartolome was in Cuba with Columbus more than six thousand children died because they were taken from their families and forced to work in mines. Many people died because of Christopher Columbus. Entire generations were wiped out due to Christopher Columbus and his men. An entire culture disappeared all due to Christopher Columbus and his men. Should we praise a murderer who didn’t even discover North America? If anyone deserves recognition it should be the thousands of lives that were lost because of Christopher Columbus. Columbus does not deserve a day to remembrance. He does not deserve to be thought of as a hero. People should know the truth of his crimes and then decide if we should praise the murder of thousands.
